oh fer fuck's sake!
I called my mom in Vancouver, partly to say hi and pass along greetings to my brother (whom I have not seen in two+ years through no fault of my own) and to inquire if she would be willing to petsit in august ((at home, not in Vancouver), so we don't have to spend $400 on boarding the dog, and nevermind the cat...) and happened to ask, "and if it was two cats?"
because the Toronto Humane Society is full to capacity and cannot take in any more cats, so they are having an adoptathon with cat/kitten adoption for only $25 (usually over $100).
And I get in return a moment of silence followed by: "you do not need another pet!" followed by the nth degree about how a pet is a responsibility and we'll have to pay for its food and vet bills (oh noes!) and basically treating me like a child who was begging at the pet store window. Hence the subject line.
sheesh.
I had other things I wanted to write about, but now I'm irked. ("Yes, it's saving a cat's life... but it's a cat's life dear..." as if that somehow makes it worth less. oh right. It is, because I should be supporting a missionary or a starving child in Africa instead.)
Feh. All I can assume is that this is leftover resentment toward my brother, who brought home a stray cat, which promptly had kittens, which the parents adopted one of. Momma cat subsequently ran away or got hit by a car or something. Feh.
*stomps around*
Tav wants kitten! Tav has never had kitten! Rufus was almost a year old when we adopted him. He is now a mighty 7! rrrrrr....
Oh, and my brother wants a computer. :p Now I have to investigate getting him a discount on staff shopping day. somehow. Long distance. urrrr....
pissed off

Speaking as a Mom, I'm sure I've never ever ever spoken to my grown children as if they still lived at home and had to be reminded to take a shower and comb their hair.
~ coughs and looks away innocently ~
You've never had a kitten??!!! You must get one. Altho I would definately recommend 2. Kittens are like real babies: they wake up at 3am and want to p-l-a-y. Better for them to play with each other then to wake you up demanding the attention!

And yes, must have kitten. -=^_^=- Bebe and Rufus will enjoy being big brothers, really! *nodnod*

kittens
Well now... Tav does indeed *need* a kitten. Everybody needs to raise a kitten at least once in their life. Kittens *rock*. Tav will *love* raising a kitten :-)Prepare for chaos and uncontrollable giggle fits.
Rufus, on the other hand, may want to run away to join the French Foreign Legion. (CK<---shelter trainer in real life ;-) check with the behavioural dept at the humane society. They'll give you some hints to help avoid Rufus hating his new little sister or brother. Or email me privately. I have a bunch of links to behaviour and kitten taming articles.)
Moms are really good at tap dancing all over your hot buttons because...they personally installed most of those buttons. I'm 45, and I'm still the Mother Creature's "baby" and she can still set me off faster than anyone else on the planet.

Re: kittens
I guess what got me going is that it's rather late for her to be mother-ing me. Long story short -- since I was 8, I have lived under her roof for a grand total of 2 - 3 years (parents divorced and relocated). She's always left me to my own devices (including financially, except when I was forced to beg to save my car or heat in the winter, which I have not done for over a full year now) so this was rather out of the blue.Anyway.
Yes, I'll do my research and try to make it as easy on Rufus and the kitten as possible. Kitten acquisition may wait until September, as we are going away for two weeks' vacation in August, but kitten will be acquired. Resistence is futile. Your ass will be laminated. Yes, 12. >.<
And I may take you up on that offer when things get settled. ^_~

On the other hand, since it is one day my ambition to invest in cats whose duties it will be to sit about, be fed, petted and look with scorn upon my guests… well, you have my sympathies.
Is there no chance of adopting a kitten for Rufus to mentor anyway?

But in reality, we're only going to be home for three weeks, then away for two, and that's really not fair to a kitten (and we'd miss two weeks of kitten-ness!), so it may not be the best time.
But come September... -=^_^=-

And... you have two pets already who are just fine and healthy. Why is your mum making such a big deal of it? Honestly, 2 cats are no more difficult than 1 cat. Yeesh.

And I know, I don't get it either. She's apparently in hyper-maternal mode or something. :p
